Over at a blog that couldn't have more different views than I do, El Nuevo Federalista, an interesting post recounts who is the worst enemy that pro-statehooders face.
The article goes on to describe the reasons why the Ferré-Rangels will fight in the shadows so that the United States of America never grant statehood to Puerto Rico.
To say it succintly the Ferré-Rangel's motivation is money; obtained by milking Puerto Rico's government for all it's worth. And the article is fascinating in it's description of how many ties the Ferré-Rangel's have into different areas of our economy.
I've always thought that the current generation of Ferré-Rangel's ties to the pro-statehood movement are shaky at best. And this article would have you believing the same or worse.
Also, somebody was saying on the radio the other day that the current economic and political situation of Puerto Rico is mishap, and that someone must be gaining a fair share of money by maintaining or promoting this chaos.
Are the Ferré-Rangel's it?

The reverberation has started. My fellow blogger Gil The Jenius latest post spells demise the the idea that Puerto Rico will ever attain statehoodship. He says:
"... It is not a “right” We have earned, it is not a “debt” the U.S. has to pay... because of a simple reason: it’s their house and they can say who comes in and who doesn’t."
Whoa, harsh words there buddy! Still, I think most people won't listen. The worst thing is there are people out there that benefit! Out of this foolish notion, some poeple in our political parties make money making this the only important issue in every election.
Stop. Think... Reeeeeeeeemix!
When I was a kid, I used to play I was a ninja. I overdressed myself in black, and took my mother's broomstick and whacked small lizards dead in their tracks. I wanted to grow up to be a ninja! I wanted to be japanese! I wanted to have great physical ability, misteryous powers, deadly weapons.
But you know what happened? I grew up to be me. I like being me. I have my faults, oh yes, that I don't deny. Playing at being a deadly warrior was a childish game. And wanting to be a an oriental assassin a childish notion.
And you know what? If at 30+ plus years I were still chasing after lizards and wishing to be deadly, I would be a sorry sight. A poor adult, who could not fend for himself. Even if I had a stick. I grew up, I got (somewhat) wise. In the end my wish did not control me. In the end, I learned.
Like The Jenius says:
"We can do better. ... Not becoming a state is not Our loss; not knowing how to be Ourselves is."
Indeed.

I just wanted to translate for you the first paragraph of the answer given by Noam Chomsky, to the following (also translated):
"Could you talk about the geopolitical situation of Puerto Rico?"
To which he begins to answer:
"Model for Latin America? I do not believe so. I say, it is a completely artificial society. It has a high quality of life, but artificial. It is high compared to the rest of Latin America (but based on) royalties of American taxes, corporations that want low wage labor, drug traffic, public beneficence, aids to keep the people quiet, so that the United States can do with Puerto Rico and its people whatever they want. Want they want (United States) are military bases, soldiers, chemical plants, pharmaceutics, a safe place for American tourists, quiet and obedient people. The result is that, even with the high quality of life, half of the population now live in the United States, where the great majority worked in sweatshops and now suffer from school desertion, health problems, live in the poorest conditions... That seems to me evidence that it did not work."
