I actually almost can't believe how accurate that description is!

La mayor parte de los estadounidenses en general no sabe que Puerto Rico existe. Eso es un hecho. De aquellos que conocen acerca de Puerto Rico muchos piensan que aquí se vive como en una republica bananera.

Una de las maneras en las cuales se han cimentado estas nociónes en el pueblo estadounidense es la manera que se representa a Puerto Rico en el cine.  Por ejemplo, en el filme Assassins las tomas donde se presenta a Puerto Rico en su mayoría son de las calles del Viejo San Júan y de sus edificios históricos. Además, los automoviles que se ven no son muy modernos.

Buscando en el  Internet me dió curiosidad ver las siguientes aseveraciones acerca de una película puertorriqueña que se exhibirá en los Estados Unidos:

• “Our film basically is a true portrait of Puerto Rico living today,”

Me imaginé rápidamente una película enseñando un Puerto Rico moderno, donde existen edificios modernos, automoviles modernos, medios de comunicación modernos, etc, etc.

Sin embargo me desilusioné más rápido aún cuando supe cual era el título de la película:

Ladrones y Mentirosos ( o Thieves and Liars para los estadounidenses que la vayan a ver...)

Si.  Ese es el título de la película.  Y no estoy diciendo que la película es mala, ojalá sea muy buena y demuestre la calidad de lo que se puede producir aquí.

Pero que triste es tener que reconocer que ese es el mejor título para una película puertorriqueña es estos dias...

Como regla nunca compro el mismo juego dos veces. Me explico; muchas veces hay juegos que salen en varias plataformas a la vez, o juegos que salen en una plataforma primero y luego en otra. A veces el juego es idéntico a veces el juego es mucho mejor en una de las plataformas.

Hay veces que me veo tentado a romper la regla. Como cuando me compré el GameCube despues que ya había comprado Soul Calibur II para el PlayStation 2; y me dió una gran tentación de comprarme Soul Calibur II para el GameCube porque solo en la versión del GameCube se puede seleccionar a Link de Legend Of Zelda

Así que, que bueno que resistí la tentación de comprarme Resident Evil 4 para el GameCube y para el PlayStation 2. Ahora va a salir Resident Evil 4 para el Wii y estoy seguro que será la mejor versión, por aquello de los controles del Wii. El comercial japonés de Resident Evil 4 (la serie se llama BioHazard en Japón) me pareció super charming porque sigue el mismo tema de enseñar a la gente jugando con su Wii y en especial el control del juego en el Wii. Pero este comercial tiene un twist que no tienen los demas comerciales de Nintendo. Veanlo:

Anoche, casi a la medianoche ya habia bajado la version muy mejorada del navegador de Internet del Wii. Lo mas obvio del mismo es una mejora substancial en la velocidad de presentacion de las paginas. Me gusta mucho, el que ahora se puede esconder la barra de navegación que antes ocultaba una parte substancial de la pantalla. Tambien esta cool el diccionario que completa las palabras. Para entradas rápidas como esta funciona muy bien.

So "consulting" wasn't a big change. But then, as a mere employee, consulting might not be what you think it might mean. In my job it means jumping from being a Microsoft SQL Administrator one hour, to configuring Microsft Outlook the next, and then updating a clients Drupal based website in a third hour. It means I get to be a jack-of-all-trades yet master-of-most-but-not-all that I like to be. It's a swell job... I'm not getting rich... But at least I'm a lot happier now than when I was in the government. But then, there's the worst client...

I came to this realization pretty quickly.

The worst client isn't the one that doesn't renew your contract...

Those are bad, granted, but the worst client is the one that does not know what he/she/it wants!

Yes, clients that know not what they want are the ban of shoe salesmen everywhere!

And they also make consulting harder that it should be. Let's see:

• Client [decisively]: I want a computer. Cheap.
• Me [after shopping around]: OK. Based on your needs, run MS Word, browse the internet, store media files I recommend this one. It's a brand name, three year warranty, average processor but with more ram and disk space than most. It's also dirt cheap.
• Client [pouting]: But I wanted a laptop.
• Me [eyeroll++]: OK. Here I found this model. It's nearly the same configuration as the previous one and a huge deal to boot, considering it's a laptop.
• Client [frowning]: I think it's too cheap. I don't want to be seen with a cheap laptop in tow!
• Me [frowning++]: Well, look at this top of the line model. It's stylish black with emerald green trimmings that match your eye color. It costs double compared to the last one.
• Client: You know what. Buy whichever one you want, just make sure its the pricey one.

These things happen all the time. And I hate it because these types of clients burn up my most valuable resource: time.

There's only one solution (that I can think of) to this problem, and that is charging for my time. The unfortunate thing is, right now I don't get to decide the terms of service for my clients.

I definitely didn't know what I was getting myself into when I decided to jump the gun and ditch Blogger. While I definitely still want a blog that reflects the knowledge I possess about open source software, I didn't know that migrating all my old content from Google's Blogger would be this hard.
