"A truly rich man is one whose children run into his arms when his hands are empty." ~ Anonymous
I put in the above quote in a post I made about my father. Today more than ever remains appropriate for my father who, may very well not even see me today. As they say: you reap, what you sow. Or, as I always say: Each one obtains what each deserves. The quote also helps express my fear, that I won't be a good father. That I'll turn out to be as bad as my father was. And that my children will not love me.
My daughter is almost, but not quite, four years old. I've seen five year olds that aren't as tall as her when she was three. She's big, but few on words. She'll often say: "Daddy wants cookie." Which actually means: "I want daddy to give me a cookie." To which I will invariably respond with: "Gimme a kiss, gimme a hug, hug hard!... I love you!" And a cookie she gets. Sometimes she'll kiss me, sometimes she will let papá kiss her. Sometimes she doesn't want to "hug hard!" And it's practically a miracle if she says "I love you.", back at me.
I am not too keen on special occasions like Father's Day. Let's face it, most of the holidays" turn out to be nothing more than generalized marketing campaigns to get people to buy stuff. Commercialism. It makes me sad.
But not today, my daughter saw to that...
It was twelve o'clock sharp, the start of Father's Day, I was at my laptop as usual. Out of the blue my daughter comes into the living room and tells her mother: "Mommy wants daddy!"
I barely have time to push away the computer before my daughter jumps on my open arms. Kisses me. And hugs hard!
She didn't say, "I love you."
But she didn't have to...
The information soldier knew this weekend would be special...
Happy Father's Day!
